While using Mozilla 1.4b and 1.4 on a daily basis, three times in the last five
months or so I've lost all my bookmarks. I'll notice when I start up Mozilla
that my Personal Toolbar folder is clear (only has "Home" and "Bookmarks"
listed). The bookmarks.html file in my profile is as follows:
<!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1>
<!-- This is an automatically generated file.
It will be read and overwritten.
DO NOT EDIT! -->
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
<TITLE>Bookmarks</TITLE>
<H1>Bookmarks</H1>
<DL><p>
</DL><p>
I didn't add any bookmarks recently. All my bookmarks are in folders on my
Personal Toolbar. Everything else in my profile (passwords, cookies, etc.) are
kept. I'm now backing up my bookmarks monthly.

I would suggest to install mozilla 1.5b, as 1.4 had a serious bug on win98,
maybe less on winXP, due to bug 204374. I´ve got 1.8 MB of bookmarks, and a lot
of them, 18 folders, folders therein not counted, in my personal toolbar, and
never lost bookmarks. Did you install ontop of an older mozilla, or did you
deinstall first?
Do you use extensions? Did you lose prefs.js?
