this appears to work for me on the trunk
1) from 4.x, have a card with a nickname
2) export to ldif
3) from trunk, import that ldif
the nickname is not lost.

from david:
"we don't show the nickname column by default in thunderbird, which could be the
source of the report that nicknames aren't converted."
