BMS says when importing an address book (need to find out what import format was used) the nick name field was not imported.
apparently the users was importing via LDIF from a 4.x address book.

this appears to work for me on the trunk 1) from 4.x, have a card with a nickname 2) export to ldif 3) from trunk, import that ldif the nickname is not lost.
from david: "we don't show the nickname column by default in thunderbird, which could be the source of the report that nicknames aren't converted."
