I cannot change the font for reading plain text incoming mail, apart from
toggling between default fixed and variable width fonts. I cannot change these
default fonts. The preferences I set in Preferences - Appearance - Fonts are
ignored.
This is an important issue because a large part of my incoming mail is in
various languages and commonly encoded as UTF-8. To view this correctly I need
to choose a font which gives proper support for the language in question. The
default fonts give only partial and inadequate coverage of some of the
languages. Sometimes I get a fallback into a font chosen apparently at random
from those on my system.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Select a plain text message with UTF-8 encoding. It appears with a fixed
width font which appears to be Courier New.
2. Go to Preferences - Appearance - Fonts, choose Unicode in the top box, under
Monospace choose another monospace font e.g. Bitstream Vera Sans Mono or
Terminal (among the few fixed width fonts on my system which are marked as suh
in the font tables).
3. Move to another message then again to the original UTF-8 message.
Actual Results:
Message still displays with Courier New or similar, no change seen.
Expected Results:
Message should be displayed with Bitstream Vera Sans Mono or Terminal.
May relate to bug 201695. Certainly relates to bug 26182 which was reported as
fixed three years ago, but it was not (or has regressed) - or at least the UI
for the fix is not working.

Possibly a dupe of bug 90792. See also bug 202654, bug 206716.
I set up three different monospace fonts in Western, Baltic and Unicode.
Composing with these encodings set, I find that the Baltic mode uses the font
specified, but Unicode uses the Western font. On display of the messages, all
use the Western font. (This with 1.5Final, Win2K.)

If this is a dupe of bug 90792, its comment #1 is very misleading. My bug does
not relate at all to changes of locale. The locale on my system has always been
English (UK).
Bug 202654 relates to font size not font face, but these may be different
symptoms of the same problem. Bug 206716 may also be related, although my main
problem is with display rather than composition.

smontagu is right. This is a dupe of bug 91190 which I'm supposed to fix ;-)
