If you are browsing a newsgroup and wish to see a threaded view, clicking on the
icon in the upper left of the headers pane puts the messages into threads. To
sort the threads by date (or sender or whatever) by clicking on 'date' in the
headers pane it reverts to an unthreaded view of the headers. Perhaps this is a
'feature', if so, it's a suck feature. It is necessary then to browse around in
the menus to sort the newsgroup as desired (for example, to find all the threads
started by "joe schmoe"). Obviously, if I wanted it to sort by date in an
unthreaded way I could just click the 'show threads' icon again, then click 'date'.
However, by doing the above and then sorting by subject, threading is
maintained. This leads me to believe this may be a 'feature', although it
kind-of irks me personally.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click 'display message threads' in the upper left of the headers pane
2. Sort by any method by clicking the column bar at the top of the headers pane,
eg date, sender, priority, etc. (note: subject works as expected, mostly)
3. Witness and Testify
Actual Results:
The headers pane listed the headers in an unthreaded way.
Expected Results:
maintained threading and sorted the *threads* by the initial post rather than
reverting to sorting each post independantly, and neglecting threading.

In fact, this has changed recently -- see bug 72493 comment 67 et seq. In
particular, cmt.#74 there mentions a new preference:
mailnews.thread_pane_column_unthreads
Set this to False, and clicking on the column will now resort the threads
without unthreading. This is in place with Moz 1.5 and later.
See also bug 219787 where a patch extending this behavior is pending -- this
will allow clicking the Thread column header to perform the unthreading. I
suggest marking this bug a duplicate of that one.
