User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031023 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031023 Mozilla crashes after a few seconds of holding "n" (next unread message) while reading a large newsgroup with lots of unread messages (> 500). In my case it's a "cern.market" newsgroup available from news.cern.ch Messages in this newsgroup are usually heavy (contain big image attachments). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Open a newsgroup 2.Hold "n" to scroll through unread messages Actual Results: Crash Expected Results: No crash

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01". This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code. While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug (given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more reproduction information if you have it. If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved. Thank you for your help in this matter. The latest beta releases can be obtained from: Firefox: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/ Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/releases/1.5beta1.html Seamonkey: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/
With the latest available version of Mozilla (1.7.12 GTK2+Xft english build) the behavior has changed. It does not crash anymore (not so often at least, maybe because the bug was originally caught in GTK1 build which has faster interface). But still after releasing the "n" key mozilla stucks - it can not open new message boxes or groups, can not load any web pages. The progress bar scrolls and nothing happens. Pressing the "stop" button doesn't help. One have to close mozilla and open it again to work. So I think the bug (or its traces) is still there :)
Could you please try the forthcoming SeaMonkey 1.0 Beta?

Andrew, do you see this on linux? I don't get a crash on windows. But I do get a prompt after several seconds of holding down "N" of "please enter a username for news server access", with "nnnnn" in the input field. perhaps related to bug 288977? also on Thunderbird - suggesting problem in backend. Unable to find matching bug for this problem. op: "Can't check right now, 'cause I don't have any available linux box. I'll try as soon as I can."
Wayne, I see the same behavior on linux as you do with both SM 1.1 (candidates) and Mozilla 1.7.12. It does sound like bug 288977.
confirming. marking dependency to bug 288977 - but the reporter doesn't respond so it needs to be investigated when this bug is fixed

still see this version 3.0a1pre (2007082704) dupe of bug 67957 comment 37? (see the comment)
The "hang" from 67957 should just be a network hang (the app should be responsive, but no network activity should be possible (comment 16).
I held down n in secnews.netscape.com for a few seconds, then I did a netstat | grep nntp ... 70-ish connections were opened up. Thunderbird did not hang. This was in linux 2.0.0.15pre. Per results, dupe to 67957
