Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.6b) Gecko/20031109 Firebird/0.7+
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.6b) Gecko/20031109 Firebird/0.7+
The search field in the toolbar gives not feedback to the user is a "Find in
this Page" search fails.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Set the search field in the toolbar to "Find in this Page" mode
2. Enter some text that is not in the current page and press return.
Actual Results:
Nothing happens. User might assume that the search field did not register the
return.
Expected Results:
Search field should beep and status bar should display "The text '<blablabla>'
could not be found on this page."
User realizes find was tried and text was not found in the page.

Reporter, this may be a dupe of bug 225530. Try the latest nightly and see if
the problem is reproduced.

That bug is about the Find in this Page *dialog* not working.
This bug is about the *search field* in Find in this Page mode working, but not
giving user feedback in case no matching string was found (build from 11/30).
I don't see them as duplicates.

I agree there should be feedback when a search completes with no matches.
Without it, when you click the 'Find Next' button you don't receive any feeback
that you have clicked it - not good user interface design.
Also, this is inconsistent with the behaviour when you search using the 'Find as
you type feature' (pressing '/'). When it cannot find the text you get the
message 'Text not found: "foobar"'.

I've confused this a little - I was thinking it was the search tool from Edit ->
Find in This Page (which has just been fixed in Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows
NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6b) Gecko/20031201 Firebird/0.7+).
However, it actually refers to the search toolbar, which still gives no feedback
when a find is unsuccessful.

This doesn't rate a dialog. I think using the error handling from Find in this
Page would be appropriate though. (Plays a sound, message in the statusbar).
There's also a bug to have this search function use typeahead find.

talked with pch about this, we both agree this should use typeahead find, which
already does feedback, so duping accordingly.
