Details

When a mail folder is opened, the first message should automatically be displayed in the message pane. Bugs 20446 and 17074 along with this one are the only reason I am still using NS 4.7 for mail most of the time. In Mozilla it takes 6 clicks and about 20-25 seconds until I see the first message, compared to 1 click/3 seconds in NS 4.7. (The 6 clicks: 1. start mailnews; 2. expand account; 3. open folder; 4. date column for oldest first; 5. date column again, for newest first; 6. open first message). Linux build 2000.01.02.09

I completely agree that it takes much too long to get mail going and reading messages. We're working on that. However, I don't agree with the suggestion that we should read the first message in the folder. We should read the last selected message, which is what 4.x does, and is already covered in bug 10872. I'm going to mark this a dup, but if you feel strongly that your suggestion is better than our intended solution, we can enter a [help wanted] bug to make it a user preference. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 10872 ***
I don't really feel strongly either way, but just in case this makes a difference: my Linux version of NS 4.7 opens the first message in the folder, not the last selected message.
That would be a bug :-) 4.x is full of minor variances like that across platforms. Since mozilla shares much more code across platforms, we hope to fix that this time around.
