User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031007
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031007
I noticed that Mozilla 1.5, running under Windows 98 SE (I have not tested for
this issue under other operating systems), sometimes stores images in the
x:\WINDOWS\TEMP (x represents the drive letter where the Windows operating
system is stored) directory when using thumbnail images on the Web. I do use
both Mozilla's memory cache and disk cache (which is set to 50 MB), so I am not
sure why Mozilla is using the x:\WINDOWS\TEMP directory to store images.
You may wish to remove the files from your C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder before
attempting to reproduce this problem, so its effects can more easily be seen.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
Here are steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Visit http://www.stncar.com/gallery.html or another Web site with thumbnail
images that when clicked, load a larger version of the image by itself using
HTML, without Javascript.
2. Open a new tab in Mozilla by pressing Ctrl-T (let's call this Tab 2 to make
it easier to refer to).
3. Click back on the first tab with the Web site you had loaded in Step 1. Let's
call this first tab, Tab 1.
4. Click and drag any thumbnail image from Tab 1 to Tab 2. A larger version of
the image depicted in the thumbnail should now be loaded in Tab 2.
5. Now view the contents of the x:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder on your hard drive. If
you experience this same issue that I have, you should see the file name of the
thumbnail image and should be able to view it in Mozilla or any program that can
open JPEG files.
Expected Results:
Mozilla should preferably store these thumbnail images in its own cache, and not
anywhere else.
This bug has been confirmed by Joachim on the MozillaZine forums.
If this is a widespread issue, it should be corrected in the interest of privacy
and security. A Mozilla user may clear Mozilla's cache thinking all the files
they accessed were now deleted, but clearing Mozilla's cache will not delete the
files in x:\WINDOWS\TEMP. In fact, Mozilla does not delete the files it places
in x:\WINDOWS\TEMP. I have to delete them myself or use Disk Cleanup to remove them.
