I think it would be better for Ctrl+K to search for the selected text, so I
don't have to press Enter after pressing Ctrl+K.

WORKAROUND:
Select the phrase that you want to search for. Use the keyboard shortcut CONTEXT+S (where the context buttin is the button to the right of the Windows key on the keyboard).
Works on Ubuntu, I presume it works on Windows too. There's probably something similar for Mac.
If for some reason the keyboard doesn't have a context menu key, SHIFT + F10 does the same thing in Firefox though it is an extra key.

This actually works, the OP is still not working.
There may be a problem if there is a selection on the page and the user selectes the search bar to change task (so unrelated to the selection), though it still seems an handy option with some benefits.
