(and Mac, if Mac supports such a concept) With Netscape 4.x, the installer sets Netscape as default when it is run, but after that you can't really do anything to set Netscape back as the default if another browser install (e.g. IE) maliciously steals the crown (*cough*). It'd be cool if Mozilla allowed you to re-specify that it was default. Advanced users can spend their time digging through the registry etc, but most of us would like to click a button :) cc:'ing Cathy, who is one of probably a number of users (including myself) who would like to see this implemented in a visible way at some point. :)

I think this might be sean's area.
not really my area. The bug states that the browser should prompt the user if they want to reset the default browser on the system (if not already the 5.0 browser), just like how 4.x does now. I can only set the default browser initially, but then after the installer quits, it's up to the browser to deal with resetting it. I'm not sure who to reassign this to. Paul, any ideas?
Okay, sorry, back to don then.

Bill, this is part of the Windows 98/NT/2K desktop integration feature, isn't it?
Keywords: nsbeta2
Target Milestone: M16 → M17
This is mostly done. There's a new panel labelled "Desktop Integration" under Advanced that let's you set/unset Mozilla as the "default browser" to handle various file extensions and internet shortcut protocols. It doesn't work too well yet. There were lots of other ducks that had to get in a row first and this details wasn't polished sufficiently prior to the M16 checkin deadline. It's close but still needs work before it's subject to widespread (ab)use.

I think this really should be in Sarah's verification domain, as it concerns checking whether preferences set correctly 'take'. However, since she's out of town and will be barraged by bugs upon return, I'm going to tackle this one for her. Will also post to the .qa newsgroup and invite people to bang on it.
Split "[feature] Implement Desktop Integration on Mac" into bug number 44658...
OK. This bug doesn't look very easy to verify. Here are the things that I've done, and if anyone sees omissions, please feel free to mention them or investigate them. 1. Sanity confirmation that mozilla will take over file types when checked. A. Changed my default browser to Internet Explorer 5 B. Determined whether files of the following types displayed in Internet Explorer when double clicked (base state): File extensions: - .gif - .png - .htm, .html - .jpg, .jpeg, .jfif, .pjpeg, .pjp. -> IE only claimed .jpg. - .xml -> not reclaimed by IE 5. - .xul -> (of course) not claimed by IE 5. Internet Shortcuts: - http:// - https:// - ftp:// - (not sure how to test chrome://, will check) -> Note that internet shortcuts when selected from 'open file' displayed content of actual shortcut. will write bug, if one doesn't already exist. C. Within Mozilla, checked the boxes for all file types & networking protocols. D. Determined whether files of the above types subsequently displayed in Netscape 6 when double clicked within Windows Explorer. PROBLEMS: After Step D: -> Mozilla did not claim the .jfif file type from IE -> .pjpeg and .pjp were not claimed by any applications. Zero of zero -> (unrelated?) https:// shortcut to visa.yahoo.com considered invalid by Mozilla -> Icons not changed from IE to Mozilla. (will file bug) (still need to do a sanity confirmation that mozilla will release file types when unchecked.)
(I'm now going to split out the issues that I've already identified and file new bugs, noting the bug numbers here.)
So far: 37412 - "Internet shortcuts when selected from 'open file' displayed content of actual shortcut." 44714 - "Icons not changed from IE to Mozilla." 44716 - Mozilla does claim .jfif, .pjpeg, .pjp extensions when JPEG checked
I'm marking this as verified. Will continue to list other bugs that I've split off here: 44719 - "Redundant phrasing in Preferences/Advanced/Desktop Integration" 44789 - "Netscape build registers "Mozilla (file type)" file types"
Status: RESOLVED → VERIFIED
And finally... 44792 - "Desktop Integration doesn't register MIME types?"
thx eli! here are links to the bugs above: bug 44658: Implement Desktop Integration on Mac bug 37412: Internet shortcuts when selected from 'open file' displayed content of actual shortcut. bug 44714: Icons not changed from IE to Mozilla. bug 44716: Mozilla does claim .jfif, .pjpeg, .pjp extensions when JPEG checked. bug 44719: Redundant phrasing in Preferences/Advanced/Desktop Integration. bug 44789: Netscape build registers "Mozilla (file type)" file types. bug 44792: Desktop Integration doesn't register MIME types?
