Thanks to the patch for bug 239555, it is now possible to open a .EML file into
a standalone message window.
For a Mozilla installation that includes Mail/News, it would be good to extend
the browser's Open File command to support the same function. This would
involve:
- Adding the 'Mail File' selector (*.eml;*.msg) to the File Type dropdown.
- Handing off .eml and .msg files to MailNews's standalone message window
rather than loading the text into the browser.
These features would not be implemented for an installation without MailNews.

If they won't be there without mailnews, then they need to live in the mailnews
overlay.

I notice that when you load .eml files into the browser (D&D), if they are HTML
messages with inline images, the images do not display.
Anyone else seeing this?

That's bug 174692.
You asked this same question in bug 239555. The question is only tangentially
related to either that bug or this one. Bugzilla is not a discussion forum; try
posting questions in the newsgroups, please.

MASS-CHANGE:
This bug report is registered in the SeaMonkey product, but has been without a comment since the inception of the SeaMonkey project. This means that it was logged against the old Mozilla suite and we cannot determine that it's still valid for the current SeaMonkey suite. Because of this, we are setting it to an UNCONFIRMED state.
If you can confirm that this report still applies to current SeaMonkey 2.x nightly builds, please set it back to the NEW state along with a comment on how you reproduced it on what Build ID, or if it's an enhancement request, why it's still worth implementing and in what way.
If you can confirm that the report doesn't apply to current SeaMonkey 2.x nightly builds, please set it to the appropriate RESOLVED state (WORKSFORME, INVALID, WONTFIX, or similar).
If no action happens within the next few months, we move this bug report to an EXPIRED state.

Valid, see also bug 707631.
If me make .eml to *always* open in a message window, then this bug here will be futile, though.
