i've been suffering bug 240646 for a while. i've installed 1.7a and 1.7b and
had no trouble reverting to 1.6 afterwards. as of 1.7rc1, i can't revert :(
after an uninstall then install, mozilla.exe from 1.6 immediately terminates
when run. after reinstalling 1.7rc1, i can again run mozilla, but now i'm back
to suffering bug 240646.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
downgrading is unsupported -> invalid

deinstall Mozilla1.7, delete c:\progra files\mozila.org\mozilla (except plugins
subdirectory) and delete c:\program files\mozilla.org\

apparently i'm not being clear enough. when i said "after an uninstall then
install", i meant that i did exactly as you instructed. i uninstalled 1.7,
deleted the dirs mentioned, then installed 1.6. i realize that direct
downgrades are unsupported.

Marc does a clean profile work after the downgrade (a profile created with the
older build)?

Either your system has some remnant of 1.7rc1 around or the profile you used
with 1.7rc1 can't be used with 1.6.
i'm more baffled then ever :( i moved my entire "Application Data\Mozilla" out
of the way. i totally uninstalled all mozilla products. i nuked the
HKCU\Software\mozilla.org registry tree. i reinstalled a complete 1.6R and it
still won't run even when started as "mozilla.exe -ProfileManager". regmon and
filemon runs aren't terribly enlightening, at least to me. mozilla.exe starts
up, does a bunch of things, and then dies.

if any developer wants to poke around, i'd be happy to give access to my box.

1.7RC1 installs and runs just swimmingly, except that i'm still suffering bug
240646.
