When the delete message checkbox is checked the message is properly deleted,
however if the mark as read checkbox is also checked the message is not marked
prior to deletetion.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Setup a mail filter that deletes and marks as read
2.
3.
Actual Results:
The message is deleted but not marked as read.
Expected Results:
The message should be marked as read or the feature should not be selectable.

Is this bug about IMAP mail, or POP3? I'm assuming the former.

I was using IMAP when I first observed the bug.

A somewhat fix I found:
Instead of "Delete" select "Move to folder" then select the Trash. It's not
perfect(Trash goes bold), but at least they're marked as read.

"Delete" *should* be the equivalent of "Move to: Trash" plus "Mark as Read."
The "Trash goes bold" is a combination of a superfluous styling rule in the
theme's CSS (in Mozilla, Classic shows the symptom but Modern doesn't), and the
symptom of bug 230805.

I saw this bug, or something very close, occur today on a POP account -- a
message came in which was filtered with Delete; the Trash folder went bold
without a count, as I expected from the known bug mentioned in comment 6.
However, when I visited the Trash folder, that deleted message became UNread,
and "(1)" appeared next to the Trash in the Folder pane.

I have a similar problem. Using thunderbird 0.8 on Linux (built from source on
gentoo). The filter is applied to an IMAP mailbox (INBOX), moves selected
messages into a local folder, and marks them as read. Everything works except
that the message is not marked as read. I suppose that the message is also
being deleted from the IMAP server as a side effect of the move -- it certainly
disappears from the IMAP INBOX.
Point of information: the folder being filed into is several layers deep in my
folder hierarchy -- e.g. "Local Folders/stats/2004/10/w1". Also, my Local
Folders are not in the default location.

For IMAP, this is perhaps a dupe of bug 201917.

This happens for me on an IMAP mail server with Thunderbird 0.9 using Windoze 2000.

we were not treating delete as a move (which it is). Also, we were assuming
that messages moved by filters are new/unread, which is not true...
