When I download file types I have no default action for I get a dialog where I
can decide what to do. However most of the time I really don't get an option. At
the link linked above I download a dmg which is one of the most used file types
on Mac OS X but Firefox still don't offer any alternative under the Open
with-pop-up menu (see attached screen shot).
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Remove all default actions for dmg in your download preferences
2. Click the linked link
3. Look in the Open with-pop-up-menu
Expected Results:
I expected DiskImageMounter and Disk Copy to appear in the pop-up and also an
alternative 'Other...' where I get a regular file browser and can pick my
application of choice to handle the type of file I am about to download.
Please note that this is not specific to dmg:s. This link shows the same
behaviour but for pdf:s
http://www.svd.se/statiskt/ledare/pdf/get_file.asp?Filename=SVD-20040519-A04%20LED%204.pdf&week=21
Besides, for the latter link I would like to have a third alternative:
1. Open with <pop-up>
2. Save to disk
3. Handle with plug-in <pop-up>

See my comment on bug 253004: This appears to be an attempt at decreasing the
likelihood of a social-engineering attack in Mac OS X: if you can automatically
download and open a disk image (particularly an internet-enabled one) you can
bring files into the user's desktop or other folders with deceptive icons.

This is probably part of a large problem with determining the progam to open downloaded files. I'm attaching another screenshot of my attempt to download the first attachment.
Download -> Open lists Adobe Acrobat as the only option to open a PDF, but when this is chosen, the downloaded PDF opens with Preview, not Acrobat.

I think this was fixed recently on trunk.
