User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (000000000; 0; 000 000 00 0 000000; 00000; 000000) 00000000000000 00000000000 Build Identifier: Firefox v 0.8 When attempting to download any pdf file, error says unable to open because helper application not installed. If choose "Save file to disk," error persists. Acrobat Reader 6 is in my Apps folder and is usable. If in the Firefox dialog box i try to manually indicate its path, i can get all the way to the app itself, only to find that it is greyed out (cannot be selected). Since pdfs are universal, this is a significant problem. I love this browser! Great work!! Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. select to download any pdf file from a web site 2. download occurs immediately followed by 3. error message saying the helper app cannot be found 4. Go to firefox>Preferences>Download manager 5. select .pdf files and choose change option 6. choose open with and try to select the exact path to Acrobat reader. Cannot select the app itself! 7. Only viable option is to choose "Save to disk" for all pdfs Actual Results: as above...error Expected Results: It should use the installed Acrobat Reader in my Applications folder to open the downloaded file.
Jonathan, have you run Acrobat Reader 6 manually yet? Are you running a private Firefox build? Does this also happen using official m.o nightly bits? How about using a new Firefox user profile?
Jonathan, For steps 4-7 see bug 225574. For steps 1-3 it seems that Firefox does have problems handing files off to other programs... at times... I think this can best be seen if one removes WMP plug-in and manually edits mimeType.rdf to hand wmv files off to VLC. Thru some trial and error I found that if you set the system default for pdf's to Acrobat (then logout login) and have Acrobat running when you download a pdf sometimes it does open with Acrobat, it is hard to tell how the system will do post processing at time.
Steps 1-3 are WFM with Firefox 0.9 on Mac 10.3.4. When opening unknown file type, "What should Firefox do with this file?" dialog opens. If I select "Open with default" or "Save to disk" and check "Do this automatically...", the setting is added to Preferences->Downloads and it works (when Acrobat is default). Remaining issue is a dup of bug 225574.
Lets dup it then :) *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 225574 ***
