Gmail allows what they call labels to be applied to messages, effectively allowing individual messages to be shown in multiple mailboxes. The general inbox/archive shows what labels the messages have and you can open up a label just as you can a mailbox, though Mozilla could just allow the same message to be linked in multiple mailboxes like Unix and NTFS hardlinking for files. This categorization can happen automatically through filters. It would be good to try have something like this in Mozilla/Thunderbird since it is very useful. I have the feeling Longhorn will do something like this also.
This looks like bug 11051, but I haven't had a look at gmail yet so ..
I suppose, since that bug has morphed slightly since it was first reported. I never realized the potential until Gmail came out. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 11051 ***
