User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8a1) Gecko/20040520 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8a1) Gecko/20040520 Anytime I try and download ANY file, I get an error message. Seemingly, Mozilla tries to execute the file (nobody asked it to do so) and it creates an error. See example. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Download any file (or try to.) 2. 3. Actual Results: See URL image of error. Expected Results: It should work.
I notice that Foxfire 0.91 is able to download files just fine. Why can't Mozilla 1.8 alpha (or any of the 1.7 versions) do the same thing on Dell 8200 Windows 2000 equipped computers? Why is it that no one else has commented on this problem? Am I the only user to experience this problem? I do notice that on some computers it works fine. I notice that on others (such as the Dell 8200 laptop) the download fails.
dupe of Bug 246528 Did you try to do a clean install/uninstall of Mozilla and to create a new profile? Your error sounds like profile corruption or installation without uninstall the old version before.
I have just tested by completely erasing the old profile and installing 1.8a again. This DOES allow the download to work again. However, I want to save my old email files, bookmarks and such. I used Mozilla Backup 1.1 to try and save the profile data and it completed without without error and saved the data. However, the rebuilt profile still had the same "download failure" error. When I tried Mozilla Backup 1.3.1, it refused to save the profile saying the profile was corrupted. Does anyone have information on what file(s) might be corrupted so I can just delete the corrupted files, reinstall and save my email files, bookmarks and address book? Other than this error where files cannot be download, Mozilla 1.8a works flawlessly. I am hoping that there is just one file in the profile somewhere I can delete it and save my data.
Try to delete in your old profile the files xul.mfl, downloads.rdf or chrome\chrome.rdf (you will lost your themes and extensions). Does this help?
Thanks for the ideas. I removed profile the files xul.mfl, downloads.rdf and chrome\chrome.rdf. Then I rebooted and still could not download files. Then I reinstalled Mizilla 1.8a and the problem remained. I noticed that in the error message: http://www.gpsinformation.org/joe/misc/mozdownloaderror.jpg the windows say that the download is occuring with the filename in the upper window and then WITH <autorun.inf>. I am NOT trying to download and EXECUTE the file, just download and SAVE the file. Is this autorun.inf supposed to happen by default? Why is the system not downloading and then asking for further instructions as to "save" or "launch"?
Hmm ... try to delete all entries in Preferences -> Navigator -> Helper Applications for file types.
(In reply to comment #6) > Hmm ... try to delete all entries in Preferences -> Navigator -> Helper > Applications for file types. I do not find any folders such as you suggest in Mozilla.org or Mozilla Profile. Can you please be more specific as to where these helper applications are found in Mozilla 1.8a? Thanks
(In reply to comment #7 Ah Ha! I found the helper applications and deleted the one that was to use <autorun.inf> and now I can download files just FINE.. Many thanks to ostgote!!! Joe
(In reply to comment #8) > Many thanks to ostgote!!! Joe, please resolve this bug as WORKSFORME and your other bug 246528 as DUPLICATE of this. Thanks.

On another computer with 1.8a2 Mozilla, I could not get downloads to work and I had to go to Mozilla Browser>edit>Preferences -> Navigator -> Helper > Applications. Then I put my mouse on each entry and looked to see what the helper was going to do with the entry. I found MSDownload was calling for <autorun.inf> I deleted MSDOWNLOAD from the helper list and this made this particular computer start being able to download.
