I am currently using mozilla-1.7-0.3.2 and xorg-x11-6.7.0-6 from fedora rawhide,
but this issue has been present for a long time (at least a year, maybe longer).
As soon as this page (or most sub-pages at this site) finishes loading, CPU and
memory usage jumps. CPU usage sits at 30-40% on my system (P4-class). 20-30% of
total CPU time is used by X, and 5-15% by mozilla. An additional 90MB or so of
memory is used between mozilla and X (pmap output below).
Firefox has the same problem, as does Konqueror, only with Konqueror CPU usage
is even worse (total 60-70%). Turning java and javascript on or off makes no
difference that I can tell.
This problem also exists in mozilla on Win2k (at least with mozilla 1.6, which
is the latest I have been able to test on this platform). In Win2k, however, the
CPU usage is only present when the window is visible (it falls to zero when the
window is covered or a new tab opened).
MSIE does not show any excess CPU usage on Win2k (which is presumably why the
website hasn't fixed whatever horrible thing they are doing).
Some diffs between pmaps are shown below. I haven't used oprofile before, but I
suppose that might be the next step. If there is anything an inexperienced
debugger like me can do to help, let me know.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. start mozilla in X or Win2k (maybe others, too)
2. load http://www.highfidelityreview.com/
3. watch memory and CPU usage jump dramatically
4. close the page, and watch CPU and memory usage return to normal
Actual Results:
Big jump in CPU and memory usage using Win2k+moz1.6, and xorg+moz1.7.
Expected Results:
Load the page without excessive CPU or memory usage. MSIE somehow manages this
on Win2k, but Konqueror has the same problem.
Diff between before and after pmaps for mozilla shows:
