In this case it would be useful if the plug-in could mark itself as "dirty" i. e. having unsaved changes. If a dirty plug-in is loaded in full mode in a browser window or tab the browser could display a save confirmation dialog before the window is closed or the browser is quittet and therewith offer the user a chance to save the changes.
