250808 - "Windows cannot find.." error occurs opening link on the desktop with Firefox as default browser

I have found this bug in Bugzilla but it is mentioned at
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=91430&highlight=windows+cannot.

This bug is present in Firefox 0.9, 0.91, and 0.92 and I have reproduced it on
Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.  When Firefox is set as the
default browser and I open a shortcut from the desktop, Firefox opens the page
but I also get an error message from Windows.  Assuming the shortcut linked to
http://slashdot.org, the message would be as follows:

Title bar: http://slashdot.org
Message: Windows cannot find “http://slashdot.org”. Make sure you typed the name
correctly, and then try again.  To search for a file, click the Start button,
and then click Search.

I was able to get around the issue by the following process:
1.  Remove Firefox 0.91
2.  Reinstall Firefox 0.8 followed by installing Firefox 0.91 in a different
directory

This worked well until I tried to remove Firefox 0.8 (Add/Remove Programs
reported an error which I didn't record).  I deleted the Firefox 0.8 program
directory and 0.91 still worked properly.  I have not tried this with 0.92.


Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Firefox 0.9x and set it as the default browser
2. Create a shortcut to a site on your desktop (MS Windows)
3. Close Firefox (there's no error if Firefox is already open)
4. Double-click the shortcut to open the web site

Actual Results:  
Firefox opened the page and Windows gave the following error:

Windows cannot find “URL”. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try
again.  To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

Expected Results:  
Firefox should open the page without giving the error (Mozilla 1.7, Opera, and
IE 6 open the same pages without errors)


I have reproduced this on three different systems.  Two of the systems were
strictly base installs with no extensions, themes, or anything else installed.
