then the link loads in the panel where the message body is supposed to be.

This might be by design, but is strange.  If it is by design, not clear how I 
can return to the message body.

It's a bug. You can work around by clicking on the message in the thread pane. 
Or if that doesn't work, click on another message, and then click back.
