Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i586; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040207 Firefox/0.8 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i586; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040207 Firefox/0.8 I had downloaded the foxfire-0.9.1 with the installer, so I decided to try to upgrade from foxfire-0.8. First I blew away all the 0.8 stuff. I unballed into /usr/local/bin, looked at it, then decided to move everything to /opt/firefox. That failed with some error about the xpi stub library. The error message provided no hints about remedies. OK, well, I needed SOME browser and still had foxfire-0.9 without the installer. I tried that. Running /opt/foxfire/foxfire from root did nothing. I tried again with some editing of /opt/foxfire/foxfire, e.g. changing a default directory from /usr/local/lib/foxfire-0.9 to /opt/foxfire, and then running from a KDE terminal with "2>~/junk" I eventually found it needed GLIBC_2.3.2 from libpthread. Sigh... So I reinstalled 0.8, and can finally get here to say I really, really like having the Firefox alternative, but installing it in Linux sucks, IMHO. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Actual Results: I went back to Foxfire 0.8 Expected Results: Please! Work some more on installation. Foxfire is almost ready for a general release, it should be able to be installed for that.
yes the line Firefox has been tested on Red Hat Linux 8.0 and later from ttp://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/system-requirements.html is a hoax. RH8 has glibc 2.2.98 and will not run with a current gkt2 build. see bug 246173
Thank you for your response. OK, so Mozilla's own page about system requirements lies. Shouldn't TPTB correct their own page and tell users what the actual requirements really are? Are those of us with older systems, e.g. respondents to 246173, just SOL? Since there are quite a lot of people with this problem on a variety of systems, could you tell us what WILL run? That's ever so much more helpful than telling us what won't run. For all the complaints about this bug, I've never found a suggested fix to make it work.
p.s. This same 618 error is in the 1.0PR release as well on this same system.
firefox 1.0+ prints a more descriptive message to the terminal (I don't know if that made it into PR1 or not) It's unlikely that mozilla.org will build a gtk1 version of firefox. You can still use Mozilla Suite, which only requires glibc 2.2 (except talkback, which requires 2.2.4). If you want a recent build of firefox, you'll need to build it yourself or find someone else to do it. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 246173 ***
