User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.1) Gecko/20040707 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.1) Gecko/20040707 Installed 1.71 over previous 1.61. Computer stopped responding for a few seconds every time I would scroll email body text, scroll page on browser, or change tabs on browser. Similar effects ocurred on OpenOffice 1.52 while 1.71 was running. Task manager showed Mozilla.exe hogging CPU time to 98% during slowdown Found solution: Uninstall 1.71 and re-install it. (Possibly some DLLs were not updated during 1.71 initial install) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Computer: 2.5ghz AMD, 500mb RAM, 25 gb left on HD I remember the solution to this problem from a similar incident about 2 years ago with Mozilla.exe

The problem re-appeared soon after the re-install. Mozilla 1.7.2 was also installed, with the same problem occuring. The problem has been isolated to the following conditions: The problem begins only when a webpage that contains a Java app loads. For instance, a radar view of percipitation at www.intellicast.com starts a Java app running, and that is when the problem begins. The problem is that every 12 seconds, the CPU usage by Mozilla.exe jumps to 100% for about 1 second each time. Even if a different Web page is subsequenly accessed, the problem persists. The only way to stop this problem is to exit Mozilla, and restart it. I have installed the latest Java runtime, with no luck. Interestingly, Firefox does not exhibit this problem (but I need mail/browser integration).
Summary: Mozilla.exe repeatedly hogs CPU time to 98% for a few seconds at a time → Mozilla.exe repeatedly hogs CPU time to 98% for a second at a time

@reporter Can you update your java version to latest one (uninstall existing, install latest 1.4.x or 1.5.x) and update to 1.7.6. And then report if the problem is gone or still exists.
