User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040803 Firefox/0.9.3 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040803 Firefox/0.9.3 All mailto: links open 60 blank IE windows (with mailto:xxxx@xxx.xxx in the URL bar) and an error message: "Could not perform this operation because default mail client is not installed." I have Mozilla 1.72 installed and was using it as my default mail client. I installed Firefox but not Thunderbird. It looks like the Firefox installation deleted any references to Mozilla's mail client. (Mailto: still works in Mozilla, but appears to be broken in IE also. IE used to open the Mozilla mail client.) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install firefox 2. don't install thunderbird 3. open firefox 4. click on any email link Actual Results: 60 IE windows open with the mailto: in the URL bar and an error message (above) Expected Results: Opened a new blank mail message window in Mozilla addressed to the email address in the referring mailto: link.
we don't touch any of the mailto: bits. If you unset Mozilla Mail as your default mail client, that might explain it.

This exact thing has happened to me. I use GroupWise, and after installing Firefox GW wouldn't even start up. I had to deactivate Firefox as my default mail app, so GW would start. But now clicking a mailto: link opens 60+ IE windows, requiring reboot to clean it all up. Firefox is clearly the instigator... (In reply to comment #1) > we don't touch any of the mailto: bits. (Sorry for the confusing replies. Had to edit, and ended up adding two replies. The one that says Thunderbird is clearly the instigator is the correct reply.)
