User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win 9x 4.90; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913 Firefox/0.10 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win 9x 4.90; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913 Firefox/0.10 While a web page that has a popup on it is loading or re-loading, if a user opens a Firefox menu box (like Tools, Options or Help, About Mozilla Firefox), the popup blocker fails and the popup will open. This occurs with popup blocking enabled. If the menu box is not opened, the popup blocking works ok. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Navigate to http://www.indystar.com/ 2.While the page is loading/re-loading (before it is finished rendering), click on Tools, Options or Help, About Mozilla Firefox to show Firefox menu box 3.The popup box will open, even though blocking is enabled. Actual Results: Popup blocking fails under these situations. Expected Results: Popup blocking should function whether a Firefox menu box is open or not. I tested on 0.9.3 and did not have this issue.

I also noticed an alarming surge in popups since 1.0PR (on Linux). Here's one site that is triggering a popup as soon as you close it's window: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259805 I think this is a major issue for spreading Firefox, after all popup blocking is one of the major selling points.
Sorry folks, wrong link. This is the right one: http://synapse.netpedia.net/ I just open that site, then close the tab and a popup appears. Nothing else done (not even accessing menus as in the original post)

I concur, I tested that site on Windows XP with Firefox 1.0PR, and when closing the Tab, a Pop-Up Appear. ( http://synapse.netpedia.net/ ).

Comments 2, 3, and 4 are Bug 259117. Please do not post other issues in this bug.
http://www.newscientist.com defeats popup blocking using the onload and onunload events for the <body> element. note that it is set up with a cookie to only happen once a day.
Hi, I use MS W2k, FireFox1.0. When I visit www.yahoo.com, in particular lowermybills.com popup keeps popping, worst yet doesn't even get flagged as popup window. Here is the url: https://www.lowermybills.com. I thought I will put the site into banned site list, but there is no such thing, is there? Thanks

I saw the same in Firefox-current as of today on linux. Instead of opening another bug report I'll just add a URL to the pot: http://www.weather.com/maps/maptype/satelliteusnational/westcoastussatellite_large_animated.html Does not seem to happen if I reload the page or if I open it in a new tab -- I think it only happens when it's the first page I open after starting Firefox.

Important addendum -- I just deleted my ~/.mozilla/firefox directory and now the popup blocker works again. There have been many recent changes in the way preferences are stored in your home directory. I recommend deleting (or moving) your firefox home directory and starting from scratch or re-importing your preferences from mozilla/Netscape. It worked for me.

Reporter, or anyone else that saw this problem, can you reproduce this with the latest release of Firefox?

WFM as well. Resolving as such. If you can reproduce using Firefox 2.0.0.6 or later with a clean profile, please comment to that effect.
