Same for me. The dialog says "Firefox is downloading and installing the updates..." for hours and nothing happens. OS : windows server 2003 logged in as non-admin.

Same on FF 0.10 / Win2000, this time as a member of Administrators group. It is spinning .... and nothing happens. Also the red update icon did not appear. I have "Periodically check for updates" turned on. Reminds me why I never use automatic updates ...

I found the reason of the problem. You have to activate "Allow Websites to install software" in order to be able to download the updates over the automatic updater.

This is not acceptable. It should either print "Sorry, you turned updates off" (but why does it then offer the update icon in the menu bar in the first place ???) or (check this!) it should work. In no case should the dialog hang.
