The browswer ceases to function when going to this webpage.
and when I quit the browser, it appearst to quit, but it remains in memory. When
I try to load it again, it won't load; but I can end it in task manager.

The Microsoft browswer handles the webpage fine.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to the webpage
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Everything sits there, though a clever set of graphics gears keep running.

Expected Results:
Allowed user to type in username and password.
I do not see firefox continuing to run in the background, but I can confirm that
this applet doesn't work in Firefox, and does work in IE using Sun's JVM 1.5.

I don't see any security implications.

I have the same problem. When I close the browser, Firefox.exe is still running
and I have to use Task manager to "end process".
I have this same issue when *any* applet is in the process of loading; in the
case of extremely applets with large downloads, this behavior is rather
annoying, for obvious reasons. Once the applet *finishes* loading, everything
goes back to normal, but Firefox locks up while the applet is loading, and
closing it during that time leaves Firefox still running according to Task Manager.

I'm using Firefox 1.0.1 and Java 1.5.0_01.
Aha, thanks to bug 142952, I figured out what the problem was in my case:
Adblock. Uninstalling that extension made Java work properly again.
No browser hanging on Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.6)
Gecko/20050223 Firefox/1.0.1

I can use stop, or close the tab to stop the page from loading, but the actual
problem is probably caused by the fact that the javascript on this page is not
valid, which then throws errors to the console.

I think this bug belongs in Tech Evangelism, unless the reporter is still able
to reproduce this bug on a newer version of Firefox (your version is 5 months
older than the newest version).

As to the last comments, these problems were already mentioned in bug 251031.

That Java applet makes me crash on latest-trunk. Damn I hate Java.
