User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913 Firefox/0.10
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913 Firefox/0.10
I have not tested this on any other platform or version, but it appears that
with Firefox 1.0PR, I can't choose anything to view my PDF downloads other than
Adobe Reader.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Adobe Reader (I'm using 6.0).
2. Make sure you don't have an entry for PDF in Preferences -> Downloads -> File
Types.
3. Click on a PDF link. Here's one:
http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/lite/gurpslite.pdf
The only available option to "Open with" is "Adobe Reader 6.0 (default)". I have
at least three other applications which show up in the Finder's version of "Open
With" (Photoshop, Illustrator and Preview). I'm not giving up though....
4. Select Adobe Reader for "Open with", check "Do this automatically..." and
complete the download (Adobe Reader should start up and show the document just
downloaded).
5. Go to Preferences -> Download.
6. Find the new entry for PDF in File Types.
7. Click the "Change Action..." button.
8. In the window the pops up, the box below "Open them in this application"
should be blank and the "Change" button should be inactive. Select "Open them in
this application".
9. An open file dialog should come up, but I can't select any application.
Neither Preview nor Photoshop nor Illustrator. I can't even select Adobe Reader.
Actual Results:
I expected to be able to select any application which could read PDF files.
Expected Results:
I was forced to select Adobe Reader initially, and couldn't subsequently change
it. It's a conspiracy! :-)
It looks like this happens regardless of what the OS's default PDF viewer is.
Firefox seems to have an unnatural bias toward Adobe Reader (at least on my
machine).
