User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20050110 Firefox/1.0 (Debian package 1.0+dfsg.1-2)
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20050110 Firefox/1.0 (Debian package 1.0+dfsg.1-2)

The accented greek characters (Unicode 1F00-1FF8) are displayed using the font
specified for Cyrillic (perhaps it is determined by my Locale).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. View the following text:
Μῆνιν ἄειδε θεὰ Πηληϊάδεω Ἀχιλῆος
οὐλομένην, ἥ μυρί᾿ Ἀχαιοῖς ἄλγε᾿ ἔθηκεν
Actual Results:
The accented characters are displayed using the font selected for Cyrillic.

Expected Results:
They should be displayed using either the font selected for Greek or the font
selected for Unicode.
Try installing Greek fonts that support Ancient Greek.

I recommend
Gentium: http://www.sil.org/~gaultney/gentium/
jGaramond: http://www.janthor.de/jGaramond/

Then, take a screenshot that demonstrates the problem and add as an attachment.
For the screenshot, please save as .PNG (not .JPEG!).
I did not have the issue described here myself.
is this working for you on a newer (recent) release?
(it's possibly fixed by bug 121879)

Problem still exists for some combinations of fonts, see attached screenschot

Ilya, thanks for the screenshot.
What distribution are you using?

Some distributions do not have proper fonts for Greek Polytonic (or Ancient Greek, or Greek Extended Unicode block).
Currently, your best shot would be to use DejaVu 2.3+ (enriched Vera), FreeFont or MgOpen.

(it's good to provide the link to the page in the bug report so that we can click click to get easily... :).
Debian testing. I also have Windows fonts installed manually.
The URL, if anyone else would like to test, is
http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0169;layout=;query=Apol.%3A17a;loc=Apol.%2017a

The Perseus website allows to configure how the text will displayed. It's the option "Configure display" on the top. Do you have "Unicode" in all options?
I think you use "Transliteration" (that is, use the latin script instead of the native script, Greek).

Can you verify whether you use "Transliteration" in the Perseus options?

To check your font coverage for Greek Polytonic, see

The Perseus website is apparently offline at the moment and will come back sometime next week (as shown on their homepage).

My catch is the bug is not Firefox-specific.
Can someone ping this report when Perseus is up and running again?
The site appears to be up but has changed and is now serving a 403 Forbidden message for the URL you provided.

If you check the first page, you will notice that the web server had a security violation recently and it will take some time to rectify.
I believe the problem is with the encoding of the text and not the font. If we have some HTML text of the mentioned page (as attached in this report), we would be able to sort it out better.
Ilya, website is back up. can you create a testcase and attach to bug?
The site won't open now, the text in the initial message I see correctly (iceweasel Debian package 2.0.0.8-1 on amd64) (As I said, it may depend on combination of fonts)
=> incomplete - no testcase
