This bug has been a continuing problem for me since version 1.0. It also happens
with any plugins I might need. For example, I will visit a website that is using
some gizmo for which FireFox has a plugin for, and when I ask for the update,
FireFox will sit there forever with its update/process indicator box showing.
I also have this problem. I was wondering if it was due to PC Cilin maybe
blocking it or something but it lets me download software from the internet in
the Download window.
I had the same problem. The update process hangs if xpinstall.enabled is set to
false. If it is true, it works fine.

Firefox 1.0.4 & 1.0.6, XP SP2
It looks as though the updater doesn't have any sort of timeout functionality.
For me it's been hanging when checking for updates. I haven't run a sniffer, but
if I had to guess, it's hanging while checking a remote site. Maybe it happens
when the target site is offline or busy.

The extension it's hanging on while checking for updates right now is
gTranslate, though sometimes it's been others.

If this is what's happening, I'd suggest the following:

- A single configurable timeout that's used per product or extension being
checked during the update search process. If there's no response from the update
server for a given item being checked, move on to the next item and give an
indication that there was a timeout on the list of products checked.

- A button and keyboard accelerator in the "checking for updates" dialog to skip
to the next product manually
This is also a problem when installing a new version of Firefox with
incompatible extensions.
The same thing occurs with Thunderbird.
Flags: blocking1.8b5?
I'm going to minus this bug. We've found several 'hangs' with the extension
update checker and we've fixed / made those blocking bugs already. Someone could
possibly dupe this against one of those.
Flags: blocking1.8b5? → blocking1.8b5-
Same for me.

I figured out that for me a setting in the options dialog was the problem:
I usally have the "Allow websites to install software" checkbox disabled.
After enabling this function autoupdate worked as it should.

Hope that this helps :)
