This bug is the Firefox part of bug 151336.
I commented out the mentioned line 544 inside the bookmarksMenu.js. It's
reported that a crash of the X-server will happen, but I for myself can't notice
any crash. Dragging of bookmarks from subfolders always works fine.
Anyone using Linux can test it? If no crash will occur we could re-enable this
nice feature? I'm using Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8b2)
Gecko/20050604 Firefox/1.0+ under Debian (Kanotix)

Commenting out the mentioned lines in bookmarksMenu.js, I am able to reorder
bookmarks in the personal toolbar and in the bookmarks menu (but not
subfolders), and move them across folders. Dropping on a folder works, too.
However, the menu closes after every drop, which perhaps should be a separate bug.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20050901 Firefox/1.6a1
under Ubuntu. Should probably be tested with a more recent build or 1.5b1, but I
don't have either ready, and I doubt it changes anything in that respect.

Does this Linux (and MacOSX !?) bug still exists with Firefox ?

Yes, I see it with Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1a2pre) Gecko/20080828125856 Firefox/3.1a2pre. Also drag&drop of an URL from the location bar onto the bookmarks toolbar doesn't work, but the latter might be another bug.

Please disregard my last comment. I saw a regression (bug 452083) which was fixed on 2008-09-01. The issue doesn't exist on trunk and on the branch. My apologies.

This does still happen for Firefox 2.0.0.x under OS X. But due to the massive changes for Places I believe it will not be fixed on 1.8 branch anymore. Even its no security issue. Marking as WONTFIX?

not going to take further fixes on 2.x, feel free to reopen if you can reproduce on 3.x or current trunk
