Oops! Pressed a wrong key here. Anyway, with current trunk build, when I drag a file (from the desktop for example) to the empty area in the tabbox, it opens in the current selected tab. This didn't happen with 2005-06-06 trunk build, so likely a regression from fixing bug 179845, I guess.
