Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4

Firefox enters a weird state when you use it to open a MS Word document while MS
Word has a 'Save As' dialog opened.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
To reproduce this error:
1) Open MS Word (I am not 100% of the version I produced this bug on at work...
I'll get back to you once I find out. I believe it is Office 2003. I cannot
reproduce it using Office 2000 on my home computer.)
2) Click 'Save As' to open the dialog box to save the file. Leave MS Word in
this state, without saving the file.
3) Open Firefox and try pointing it to an MS Word Document. When the dialog pops
up to open or download the file, choose to open it and click 'Ok'.
4) Notice weird behavior.

Actual Results:
At this point, Word should try to open up the document, but throws some error.
When you return to Firefox, the dialog box to open/download the file remains
open, but no matter what you do, you can't click the 'Ok' button... it is greyed
out. Closing Firefox and reopening it corrects the problem, but closing the
program normally doesn't close the program all the way. There is no item for
firefox on the task bar. You then have to manually kill the process.

Expected Results:
Since the first error was thrown by MS Word, I would expect Firefox to still be
able to load the document. However, Firefox should have recovered gracefully...
the open/download dialog box should not have remained in a weird state and the
browser should have been able to shut down properly by just a normal closure...
ie. right click on it in the taskbar and select 'Close'.

Firefox/1.0+ ID:2005072606
I can confirm this with Microsoft Word XP. The Open / Save Dialog refuses to
close even by selecting cancel or the close window button on the top right.
Can confirm in Minefield with Word in Office 2003:

User agent : Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9b2pre) Gecko/2007121009 Minefield/3.0b2pre

Build ID: 2007121009

I have setup a simple testcase at http://www.auctionreminder.net/bugzilla/300990.html

I found the following behaviour in Minefield:

1) As original reporter states, Word throws up an error, "The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open. Click OK, and then close open dialog boxes to continue". When I dismissed this error in Word, and didn't follow its advice, and returned to Firefox/Minefield, the "Opening..." dialog box chrome was unresponsive, though the windows close icon for the dialog worked. The download manager did not appear (when I repeated this test with download manager already open, the download appeared with progress bar at "Starting...").

When I closed down Firefox, the process was not killed, and I had to manually kill the process in task manager. Next time I opened Minefield, and opened Download Manager, the status of the dowload was "Failed" and an error dialog popped up with message:

"C:\DOCUME~1\gmc\LOCALS~1\Temp\bugzilla.doc could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder.

Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location."

2) Repeating above with more than 1 tab open: closing Minefield with the X icon caused a dialog to appear with the warning that there is a download in progress, and that quitting will cancel the download, with "cancel download" and "don't quit". However, when you click "don't quit", you are then presented with the "quit minefield" dialog with options for saving tabs etc.

3) When you dismiss the Save As dialog in word, all the failed attempts will then be opened, regardless of whether the browser is open at this point.

sps, tomcat: unsure if this is file handling or download manager, or both.
Yeah, this weirdness is reproducible.

I just tested this with WinXP + Office 2007 using FF20011 and Minefield 2007121405.

Thanks for everyones help on this bug.
