Details

(Whiteboard: [sg:investigate])

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050716 Firefox/1.0.6
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050716 Firefox/1.0.6

When invoking a java applet via the applet tag, the oldest version of Java
installed is invoked instead of the newest. As an example:
  http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/~tomw/version.html
reports java 1.3.1 is being loaded. The correct action is to load the newest
version of Java.

Safari and IE both correctly start Java 1.4.2. Only Firefox insists on running
the obsolete Java version.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open firefox on MacOSX 10.3.9 to http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/~tomw/version.html
2. View the java version being reported.
3. Open the same page on Safari and compare.

Actual Results:
Java 1.3.1 was invoked.

Expected Results:
Java 1.4.2 05 should have been invoked.
Duplicate of bug 197813 ?
Summary: Java 1.3.1 is started by the applet tag instead of java 1.4.2 05. → Java 1.3.1 is started by the applet tag instead of java 1.4.2 05.

You need to install the Java Embedding Plugin (JEP). We hope to include this by
default in future versions, but is currently available as a separate install.

http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/~tomw/version.html now shows that Firefox is getting
Java 1.4.2. Yay! Verifying as a dup.

Unfortunately, if you install the JEP you will nolonger be able to print Java
Applets. Also, I am afraid installing JEP is beyond the expertise of most
users. So it is just a partial solution available to the select few who
investigate to first notice the problem, second search the bug reports to find
197813. Third read through the pages of comments to find where to get the JEP
from. Fourth, actually are willing and able to install JEP and give up printing
capabilities.

You can't print applets using Java 1.3.1, either, on OS X (whether you
use the MRJ Plugin, the MRJ Plugin JEP, or Apple's Java
Applet.plugin).

Tested using your own URL, in Firefox 1.0.6, on OS X 10.3.9.

This means that the JEP is now being bundled (in the
Contents/MacOS/plugins directory) with Firefox nightlies. (It's been
bundled with Camino nightlies since late July.) Once the JEP gets
into release versions, ordinary users won't have to worry about
installing it (I admit the "touch" business is a bit of a pain).
