ftp stops working after downloading a file

After successfully downloading a file by FTP, no subsequent FTP transaction will
complete.
Go to ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub
Download a file, say ls-lR.gz
Tell it where to save the file, and wait for the download to finish
Do anything else with FTP. Download a file, get a new directory listing...
The status line reads "Beginning FTP transaction.", the barber pole spins and
spins and spins... The app doesn't lock up: you can cancel the transaction and do
other things (not with the FTP protocol) in that window. But no FTP transaction
in that window or another will complete.
