As far as I can tell, they are. Selecting from the list of calendars in the calendars pane allows you to toggle which events are listed in the main pane. (In reply to comment #1) > As far as I can tell, they are. Selecting from the list of calendars in the > calendars pane allows you to toggle which events are listed in the main pane. In Thunderbird Calendar component I see no way of selecting the categories to be shown in the event pane. A filter for selecting the category to be shown (similar to filter settings in dropdown combobox) would greatly enhance the user experience. Thunderbird version 1.0.6 (20050716) Calendar 2005011112-cal on WinXp Pro
I sense some confusion about the terminology. 'Selecting' an event is what happens when you click on it. Selecting multiple events is useful to operate on the collection of events, for example, to export, email, publish, print, or delete them. You can select the events in a category by 1. make sure the category column is visible (click button at right end of column headings). 2. click the 'category' column heading to sort by category 3. click on first event in category 4. shift-click on last event in category 'Filtering' is currently done by entering a search term, or by selecting from the drop down box. It only filters what is visible in the event list; it does not filter what is visible in the grid pane. 'Toggling visibility': To change what is visible in the grid pane is to put events into different calendar files, and toggle the checkmark by each file (in the 'calendars' tab) to control whether events in that file are visible. Maybe it would help to give an example (use-case) of what you are trying to do to help developers understand whether it is covered by the current mechanisms described above, or whether it requires missing functionality that would often be useful to many people. (One design goal is to keep the basic interface simple and leave out features that 80% of people should never use, especially if the features can be added as extensions. Of course that sometimes conflicts with trying out multiple ways to do things so they can be improved...)

I will try to explain from my point of view what I want to do. You are able to give each event a catagory. At the top of the large box it allows you to select events based on a time, and with certain string in the event. What I would like to be able to do is display the events based on their catagory, not what is in the event title. So as an example. I want to list all events that I have in the catagory Public Holiday. I do not see a way to do this currently.
I understand you want to find what events have (single) category 'public holiday'. You can do this by sorting by category as described in comment 3, you'll just have to scroll down to find them all grouped together. People will want to search (filter by) other fields as well, especially location and description. So a general solution should make it possible to create a filter on any field, parallel to the custom filters in Thunderbird. I suggest marking this duplicate of bug 118122 (this would be fixed if that was fixed).
