This is my first Bug Report so please understand if I haven’t followed direct
protocol.
Numerous Firefox users are unable to copy and paste images and text after
upgrading to 1.0.7. I haven’t been able to reproduce it because this information
comes from the forums at MozillaZine. The problem persists even after a clean
install. Many are infuriated and threaten to leave Fx. The Moderators and
contributors at the forums do not have a solid fix to suggest. One example

Reproducible: Didn't try
Actual Results:
did not function
Expected Results:
copy and/or paste into external application

Copy and Paste - Bug in Firefox
(Different versions, different OS)
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=220900
Workaround not working for copy & paste - bug (In reply to comment #142)
*To run clipbrd.exe (Clipboard Viewer) does not solve the copy and paste
problem, neither does opening in a new window.
*Only workaround for me is to copy from one tab, paste in note/text/any-pad,
swich to the new pad, copy from anypad and paste it. This only works if I swich
windows before the second copy and paste, otherwise the clipboard is blank again
*argh*. Awful if you work with tabs, wikis or anything.
*Other workaround is to work with one instance of firefox and do all copy and
paste operations from or 2 opera...
Situation:
Copy and paste between different tabs or windows does not work at all (100%).
This problem does not affect other applications, just firefox. It seems that the
clipboard is deleted (for security reasons?!) when swiching from one tab/window
to another, but not when working with external programs...
System:
WinXP_Pro_SP1, Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12)
Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7 (happened in the earlier version I had installed
2), Extensions: DOM Inspector, Wikipedia, Greasemonkey, CopyPlainText (tried is
as a solution for the copy and paste problem), RoboForm;
Unsuccessful tries:
1.Reinstalling after cleaning all data from previous installs
2.New User Profile
3.Open Clipboard
4.CopyPlainText (tried is as a solution for the copy and paste problem)
5.Work only with Firefox Windows, not with tabs
6.Upgrade to Firefox 1.0.7
7.Playing around with security settings
----
Suggested workarounds thus far (comment #142):
1. Open the current page in a new window (I usually just open any page in a new
window and check copy/paste there).
2. Start -> Run -> clipbrd.exe (Clipboard Viewer)
3.Copy from one tab, paste in note/text/any-pad, swich to the new pad, copy from
anypad and paste it. This only works if I swich windows before the second copy
and paste, otherwise the clipboard is blank again
4.Work with one instance of firefox and do all copy and paste operations from or
2 opera...

I can confirm that this is happening to me as well.
Extremely frustrating. Makes my normal course of work with Firefox almost
impossible.

I originally filed this bug and at the time the problem didn’t apply to me. Now
the problem has returned and with no changes made to Fx in anyway.
Workaround:
Copy and paste into Word or other
Copy from word and paste back into Fx.
Restarting Fx also seems to help.

Currently running: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; es-AR; rv:1.7.12)
Gecko/20050919 Firefox/1.0.7
Note: also happened in earlier version. Cannot confirm, but also friends with
earlier versions have the same bug. It started couple of days ago, aparently
regardless of program version.
I ran the standard diagnostic, and it didnt solve, so all the
profile/extension/fresh install suggestions are not valid. Tried all of that.
Copying to an external program does work. the problem here is that clipboard is
erased (for both Firefox and every other windows program) when changing tabs,
both existing or recently opened.
Important: Ctrl+C Ctrl+T works (pasting text or adress into a new tab's adress
bar). This should be taken into consideration.

I havent ever made a bug report before. I found this site looking for an answer
to my problem, so if this comment is less than -I'm sorry. I solved my problem
by downloading and installing the new beta 2 version. It works great so far and
I can copy and paste just fine.

Annonymous user at MozillaZine forums discovered that this glitch can me avoided
by switching tabs with ctrl+T. It worked fine for me! So, clipboard is erased
only when clicking another tab - but one can browse tabs with ctrl+T and still
paste whatever was copied.
This is great news, at least for us end-users. Hope this is useful for users to
temporarily avoid the glitch, and developers to narrow down their hipothesis.
Refer to: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=328256 (page 9)
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915
Firefox/1.0.7
I have noticed any time I left click on the toolbox, hbox (tab bar), or
statusbar with the left mouse button, the copy buffer or clipboard contents are
erased...
I have noticed if I use the scroll wheel to change tabs, the copy buffer seems
to still exist, but any time you click on any of those nodes with LMB the buffer
disappears.
Wish I could help more, let me know if there's more I can do to help.
Workaround: Either use keyboard shortcuts or other mouse buttons to navigate to
other tabs or windows.
This is my first submission to bugtraq, sorry if I'm not following the rules...

New Workaround:
* Installed MS AntiSpyware (beta) per
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=328256.
* Removing *only* New Dot Net using MS AntiSpyware was 100% successful after
reboot.
I'm not totally convinced this is a bug anymore, anyone else?

Dont want to give false expectations, but I think we got it: NewDotNet software
causes the glitch. Uninstalling the extension via Firefox won't fix it, must
remove the software via control panel.
http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html
User at MozillaZine forums found it:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=328256
Please report if anyone still has the glitch after uninstalling NewDotNet.
Comment 12•19 years ago
|

I can't find NewDotNet on my system, and tried MS AntiSpyware, no sign of
NewDotNet. I also tried the methods at the URLs recommended. I've had the
copy/paste problem, and my arrow keys, and pgUp and pgDn keys seem to fail after
a while as well.
A thing to note is that I can copy or drag marked text to the Search Box (upper
right) and then go to another tab and drag it from there into a field. So the
Search Box has become my workaround as a 'Clipboard'...
I tried upgrading to 1.5 b1 and b2 but the problems continue. Copy/paste does
work when I first launch the browser, but fails later after browsing for a while.

User Mattron5000 at Mozillazine forums has a solution for those who didnt find
NewDotNet in their add/remove programs:

I'm not a programmer, but I do wonder why Firefox was not affected by this
problem until recent versions? Also, why do IE, Opera, and other apps work fine
with NewDotNet installed, while Firefox can't co-exist? This seems like a
Firefox incompatibility issue. Is this correct? My 2 cents.

The fix that I found seems to have only worked temporarily. However, there is
something else to try at this forum that may work as a temporary fix and needs
testing.

I have this bug on winXP home with all service patches and updates installed, and also on my win98 machine. I DO NOT have new.net installed or anyplace on my system. I also have the arrow key problem as well. This has been in ALL versions of firefox I have installed.
I run AMD processors. The motherboard and hardware of my win98 and XP systems is entirely differant, and yet I have this horrible problem.

This bug seems to have followed the Firefox 1.5 release version, even though it was working fine in the beta version.

Fails for me after updating to 1.5 release. new.net or whatever not a factor.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5
Also, the arrow keys (left/right) periodically stop working in text input fields.

I believe this is related to a corrupted clipboard, and it interferes with the Firefox keyboard input stream.
I found a workaround for this bug in FF1.5, it works for me every time:
1. Click Start, then Run. type CLIPBRD.EXE and hit Enter. This will start the Clipboard Viewer.
2. Click the "X" button on the Clipboard Viewer toolbar. This clears the clipboard.
That's it! Now everything should be working normal again. Sometimes I have to do this every hour or two when I experience the bug. Hope it's fixed soon!

Using FF 1.5.0.3
Wow, this not being able to copy and cut really makes FF pretty useless...
I can still paste, but only from other apps.
Was working fine, then out of the blue FF stoped sending info to the clipboard. No changes to my system, no "NewDotNet", tried "safe-mode", complete uninstall (including registry keys) and reinstall, ran 4 spyware scanners, virus scan, nothing works. If I cannot find a fix for this I will stop using FF (which I've been using for years...)

Go to start/run type in clipbrd and press ok. That should allow you to use the clipboard correctly in Firefox as long as it is running. This is the only surefire way to get it to work that I know of.

This does not resolve the issue for me. Opening the ClipBook gives me the message "The ClipBook service is unavailable or is not started. Contact you system administrator to have this service started." This service is "Disabled" in the Services administrative tool. However, when I open the nested window for the local clipboard, the clipbrd.exe process fully utilizes the CPU and becomes non-responsive.
Further, copy, cut and paste become unusable for all applications, including Explorer.

I can reproduce this problem on Firefox 1.5.0.6 and Firefox 2.0b1.
Windows 2000 SP4. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, Left and Right arrow, Home, End,
etc. doesn't work at address edit line and search edit line. The
commands from context menu works fine.
One of related threads on Firefox forum:

Firefox developers, please let me know how can I help you track down
this annoying problem. It is not a problem for me to setup debug
environment, send you output of debug build, etc.
Best regards

Jan, can you file a new bug about how you're seeing it, that is that the menus work but the shortcuts don't? That's probably the best way to track that particular issue even if it's a regression from a fix to the other one. If you don't mind cc me to it if you do.

Ok, after one year of fighting this, here is an update:
1. I've recently begun using Firefox 2.0 RC3. The problem is still the same: The clipboard, arrow keys, forward slash, and several other keys all stop working properly at random times.
2. Launching Run... clipbrd.exe and clicking 'X' icon to clear the clipboard still works (also the Edit menu and Delete in the clipbrd app).
Just running clipbrd.exe does not fix it; clicking the X icon to clear it is the only way I know. Then all keys work properly again. Strange.

I tried to copy and paste the Olympic program for swimming from http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/Schedule/index.shtml
into Openoffice spreadsheet and it went into loop. Tried several combination of selection with the same result. Tried the same with internet explorer and there was no problem. The problem can be reproduced.

Pl. refer comments 29 & 30. FF 3.0.12 & Vista & Open office CALC problem seems to be fixed. Thanks. Pasting of just a small part of that screen is so slow that I would have abandoned it if I were just using it and not investigating a problem. Internet Explorer is also just as slow. It does not help the usage but the problem as reported is solved. Thanks again.

Based on comment #30 and comment #31: Resolving Worksforme.
According to the current summary, this bug was originally reported against FF 1.0.7, and we're quite beyond that. And there are still plenty other "active" copy & paste bugs around.
