The referenced sample SVG file has font-style="italic" text that is both stroked
and filled. The stroked text looks fine, but the fill is rendered non-italic,
so doesn't line up with the stroked text.

Here's a screen shot of the errorneous rendering, from Mac OSX Firefox 1.5 beta2:

I have not tested any other builds or platforms.
Version: Other Branch → 1.8 Branch
True for Firefox 1.5.0.1 on Mac OS X. No error appears with Cairo implementation of the same (Gentoo ebuild mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.1-r1).
Is this still an issue on trunk? This worksforme on Linux, at least.

Still present on the most recent nightly, though it appears to be a Mac-only issue. Also note the new loss of correct kerning in addition to the poor italics handling.

Still true in 1.5.0.2. I have not tested any trunk builds. This bug does not appear to affect Windows under 1.5.0.2, so it looks like a Mac-only bug.

grab essentially same for camino and minefield nightlies
Fill and stroke are the same on OS-X nightly, but not italic.
so the (lack of) italic aspect is a regression, see either attachment
Jonathan, can you recheck for italics on an up to date trunk build? WFM

Brian and jwatt,

please see attachment, comic sans is almost certainly my default font.

however it is clear that the minefield is not italic, whereas the opera is italic.

not sure if this bug should be reopened or has morphed...

Thanks. Can you give the user agent string of the build you're using? I borrowed a mac yesterday to check this and it rendered italic in yesterdays trunk nightly just fine. Very strange.

The mac I borrowed was an Intel machine. Might that make any difference Brian? I'll try and get the exact user agent string later today.

No, its unlikely to make a difference. I suspect jonathan is hitting bug 364713, by choosing a font which doesn't have an italic face, and we're not able to synthesize one yet.
"we're not able to synthesize one yet"

Brian & jwatt

this is where it gets interesting.

in css important is used by authors and users to 'help' define priority.

I'm not aware how it is intended this be handled in SVG.

but this is probably not the place for such a discussion.

In that case this bug would be invalid. Jonathan, can you get italics using any font? Can you try experimenting with different fonts please and, if you can't get any being italic, can you list the fonts you tried?

It's handled exactly the same as it's handled in HTML. Please file another bug if you have a problem with !important.
Times gave italic.

filing !important bug, but this could get ugly...
Excellent.

Thanks for the suggestion Brian.
