User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7

A placeholder is usually put in place of a broken image when a page has finished
loading. I believe we're using a red dot right now for that.

However this only happens when FireFox is in quirks mode. If FireFox is in
standards mode, the broken image icon is not displayed at all, regardless of
what the browser.display.show_image_placeholder preference is set to.

At the very least, I think an option to enable placeholders in standards mode
ought to be included in FireFox, but I don't see why broken image placeholders
should not be displayed in standards mode anyways.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Load a valid HTML document that references an image that does not exist
2. Load an invalid HTML document (quirks mode)

Actual Results:
1. Broken image icon is not displayed in standards mode
2. Broken image icon is displayed in quirks mode

Expected Results:
Broken image displayed in both standards and quirks mode
Duplicate of Core bug 110213 (and/or Core bug 180622)?
Marking this a duplicate of bug 41924. In the comments on 41924, Ian lays down
the law on what I'm reporting in comment #152 of bug 41924.

I'd still like to see the option of enabling broken image placeholders in
standards via a preference. As someone who has to keep check of other peoples'
pages, a broken image icon is an easy tool to locate something that's wrong and
needs to be fixed.

I also think that it's important to convey to the user that there is missing
content that the author intended to include within the document, rather than
simply displaying nothing and, perhaps, changing the meaning of the information.
