Hey. It would be smart to have an feature in the options-dialog to associate Firefox, Thunderbird, and other moz-apps like nvu with file-extensions of windows.

Im not sure how this is a toolkit issue. Different apps can choose whether or not to provide the option to set file type associations. Incedentally, this issue for Firefox is a wontfix, see bug 244257.
