When a black gtk2 theme such as Black-knight is in use, Bankofamerica.com loads as depicted in the screenshot linked to below, however
in Opera which is 32bit renders the page correctly. [The second link.]

This bug really only manifests if one is running Firefox in native 64bit mode and not through a 32bit compatability layer. The 32bit version of the browser renders the website the same way opera does. Gmail is also affected and various other websites like Ebay that use transparent as a colour definition. [May only manifest on certain parts of the website, like Ebay it really only becomes a problem when you get start looking at available items etc.] Sites that expressly declare the colours do not experience this problem.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Apply dark colour scheme such as black-knight
2.Run native 64bit Firefox 1.0.7 or 1.5rc3
3.Go to bankofamerica.com,or gmail.google.com or bugzilla.mozilla.org
Actual Results:
Page background colours and/r fonts render incorrectly sometimes gray on white[background] text other times black on black text.
Expected Results:
Render pages with correct background and/or font colours as do the 32bit versions of said software.

I really think this is up to the author of theme to fix not mozilla.

As for comment five I can't think of a good reason for page rendering to be affected in this way by the system theme can you? Its also a bit much to expect the theme maker to test thier theme with millions of websites.
There are a few ways to solve this problem in Firefox:
1. Disallow this type of inheritance entirely (This is the ideal solution.)
2. Users reverse engineer websites and apply css hacks [if possible] to offending page elements. This is of course suboptimal since the user would have to not only know enough web design to find and create a hack to correct the issue they would also have to know where to place the hack in order to enable it in Firefox.
3. Integrate dtylesheet manipulation into the Firefox interface (See stylish extension.) While this would make it easier to apply the hacks it only partially solves the problem with solution two you still have to know webdesign in order to make proper use of the extension. (This is done in Opera.)
4. To address the problems with solution three provide a "point and click" interface that allows the user to control the rendering on a per site basis without having to know anything about web design.

This bug was reported on Firefox 2.x or older, which is no longer supported and will not be receiving any more updates. I strongly suggest that you update to Firefox 3.6.3 or later, update your plugins (flash, adobe, etc.), and retest in a new profile. If you still see the issue with the updated Firefox, please post here. Otherwise, please close as RESOLVED > WORKSFORME

The 32bit version running through the compatibility layer also seems to be affected unlike in the original report.

Even with a new profile?

Yes, even with a new profile with no extensions installed under it.

Can you please retest in Firefox 4 with a fresh profile. There are quite a few fixes and improvements in it that may help with the issue. If you still see it, can you please use the Add attachment link at the top of the comments box to upload your attachments there?

Attached an example of the problem as requested in FF4.0. In the screen-capture there is text in the input fields you just can't see it because everything is black.

This is another example of the problem. In this case the background should be white instead of black.

This bug was reported using a pre-release version of Firefox 4. Now that Firefox 4.0.1 final has been released, can you please update and retest your bug? A fresh profile would be a good starting place to test,

This happens with gtk3 and with gtk3 color schemes enforced by KDE. I use the Breeze Dark theme, and under GNOME Application Style settings, I chose `Prefer Dark GTK3 Theme` as well before running Firefox the first time. Now certain textboxes appear dark by default, and the default text color in the textboxes have become gray, making them hardly legible on light backgrounds.
I realize this is a really old bug report, but I'm using 63.0.1 and really annoyed by it. I didn't find anything relevant on user-defined about:config settings that I could reset either.

oxwivi, does this still happen in the latest versions? I'm wondering if since we've switched to WebExtensions rather than the old-style add-ons if things have changed.
