In 4.7, if we have an instance of navigator running, we detected it and if the user tries to trigger the app from the command prompt, we just brought of the new navigator window. Also, if some one tries to bring profile manager window, we asked users to quit the app (communicator). We should do similar detection on mozilla app too. Here is what I have seen. From the command line, run mozilla (type mozilla). Profile Manager comes up. Select a profile and start the app. Keep that window and run mozilla from the command prompt again. I get the profile manager window again. Ideally (like in 4.7) we should just bring the new browser window with the profile that is already in use. Otherwise we will have consistencey problems.

As law noted on bug #8393, some people consider this a feature, and on unix this has been the norm. While this would be unexpected behaviour for an average mac or windows user, and does risk profile corruption, I find it useful (on windows and linux) to be able to run two different builds when debugging some problems. I hate to say "can we make it a pref", but, well ...
This bug has been fixed as of my checkins from Friday. In order to resonably support making Mozilla one's "default browser" it was necessary to detect that Mozilla wa already running and communicate with the already-running process to request that a new window be opened. Otherwise, one would end up with a separate instance of Mozilla for each desktop icon they double-clicked on. I'm going to resolve this one FIXED. If somebody desparately wants to launch multiple processes, I suppose we could add a command-line switch. But they should open a new RFE bug for that.

verified fixed on win95/win98/winNT4/win2k for 2000051908 build. As far as the command line switch goes, after considering this some more, it doesn't seem that vital (I'll miss it, but I can workaround). There are bigger fish to fry, I suppose. :-]
