The bottom of the stack seems to be missing frames, as nsAppStartup::Run does not call js_ForceGC, nor even JS_GC. Is this crash from an overnight or longer session? Did the system get sluggish? OOM (out of memory) handling bugs usually look different. We will fix as much of this as we can for the Firefox 1.5.0.1 release later this month. Tracking the potentially several leak regressions via the mlk1.8 metabug. Please help if you can -- in particular, if by trying nightly builds from ftp.mozilla.org people can say *when* the regression happened after the last Deer Park beta, that could be crucial. Binary search is log(n), but even if we find a one-week regression window, that would help. /be

I never saw this in the last beta. I have 2 GB of memory, so I do not think that is a problem, although I have seen stories of memory leaks. I often have animated radar maps displaying from weatherunderground.com. I leave Firefox on all the time, so it is usually up for a long time when it crashes. Thank you for making the effort to fix this. I love Forefox/Mozilla :-)

They are animated gifs that reload every 5 minutes, I believe. I also have the Wall Street Journal page loaded all the time. It also reloads frequently. There does seem to be a memory leak though. Right now, Firefox is using 404 MB of memoory!
Can you give me some examples of the URLs that you are leaving it on?

It has edged up from abour 50 MB when I loaded FF, to 93.2 MB now. If I manually reload the page, the memory usage goes up too. I just cleared the cache, and the memory usage did not decrease. I was wondering if the cache manager was not smart enough to discard the contents of reloaded pages?

James, do you know whether any of the pages involved use the addEventListener() method? Just looking for it in the HTML and JS used by the pages should tell you. Could you check?
Since my last message, I am up to 117 MB. WSJ was the only dynamic page loaded. I had bfcache set to 50 I killed the WSJ page, and the usage dropped to 115 MB. But it is holding steady at 116228 now with the weatherundergroun page. So I guess it is the Wall Street Journal page or else resetting bfcache. I'll try the wsj again. Neither page uses addEventListener() its sort of steady at 118MB now, so maybe it was the bfcache.
When the WSJ page reloaded, it jumped up to 123.3MB
With the default bfcache setting (-1) the maximum bfcache entries it will keep around is 8 (with 2gb ram+). 50 seems a _bit_ high. Every one of those pages will hold on to every single image on all of those pages, so if you've loaded some pages with big images on them, that number is going to grow pretty large pretty quickly.

oops, I had set the entries and not the viewers. I might note I also have fasterfox installed.
I've never used fasterfox, but from looking at it, the "Enable FastBack" setting under Rendering is what you want to disable. I assume that sets max_total_viewers correctly. Let me know how things run with that properly turned off and with max_entries restored to 50.
The memory has creeped up over the day from 38MB to 99 MB
This morning, I started Firefox afresh with 34 MB of memory. I only had the WSJ page up. Now it is up to 71 MB.
I wouldn't really think it was a problem until it hits 500+ mb. If your image cache is actually full, it would be using 50mb by itself + whatever for the pages + bfcache + history + whatever else.. ~100-150mb running size doesn't seem too scary.

It would be triggered by JS memory pressure, and since you measured VM size and it was much bigger, this just indicates a memory leak, again. But bfcache is not implicated in this leak. I downloaded leak-guage.pl, but am not sure how to use it to help. It would be easier to run on Linux, but no Mozilla product will run there anymore (others see this too). But I can run on Windows and have Active State perl.

I just compared Firefox on my desktop to Firefox on my laptop. The latter has been on all day with the WSJ and is still at 35 MB! So then I looked at the plugins. My desktop machine has 2 extra plugins: Greasemonkey and Talkback. I uninstalled Greasemonkey on my desktop and will install flashblock on my Laptop and see what happens.
This morning, My desktop FF has 83409 KB, and the Laptop has 36880KB, and they both have the same plugins! Both are displaying the same WSJ page. Strange.
Do the two systems have the same physical ram. Are they idle other than running FF? If not, the laptop might have experienced memory pressure and the OS trimmmed the workingset of the laptop to give to other applications.
Actually, my laptop was doing nothing and has 1 GB of memory. The desktop has 2 GB and was running McAfee last night, so it seems opposite to what might be expected.

Are you able to confirm this on recent trunk/1.8 branch builds?
I gave up on Firefox because of this and switched to SeaMonkey which does not have this problem.....
Might you have accessibility API support enabled on one machine and not the other? You could installed https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2407/ and go to about:accessibilityenabled to find out.
For sure I did not install accessibility extensions. But there was a huge memory leak that always got me, I still think triggered by self-refreshing pages.

James gave up in FF in comment 41 - I missed that. Although bug 418864 indicates he's returned (on Mac). Is there a clear testcase?

I am back on FF on my Mac. It crashes the kernel! Has done so 5 times now. But I will file that as a new bug. So close this one.

Kernel crash would be a Mac OS X bug. Maybe we can workaround, or stop doing some buggy thing on our part that has the effect of crashing the kernel. But is it truly a kernel crash? /be
