This appears to be a regression in 1.5 and the trunk build 20051230, as this does not affect 1.0.7. A pre block with overflow set to "auto" containing a line of text longer than the viewport does not render with a horizontal scrollbar, making the clipped text unreachable. If the pre block contains more than one line of text, the horizontal scrollbar is rendered as expected. If the single line pre block is switched to a div block, the horizontal scrollbar is rendered as expected.
Attached file testcase
This testcase compares a single line pre with a single line div and a double line pre. When viewed in Firefox 1.5, the single line pre is missing a horizontal scrollbar. When viewed in Firefox 1.0.7, the single line pre has a horizontal scrollbar.
This screenshot demonstrates the above testcase on Firefox 1.5. The result is the same when viewed on the latest nightly build 20051230.
This is worksforme with a recent nightly trunk build and worksforme with a 2005-09-05 1.5 branch build.

I was just bitten by this in FF3 on OSX. Definitely still a bug. Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.0.8) Gecko/2009032608 Firefox/3.0.8
