The favicons as displayed in the tab bar are scaled to 15x15 (from 16x16), and consequently often look ugly. This is more apparent on sites where text appears in the favicon. The screenshot (magnifified 2x) is of megnut.com; another site is http://news.bbc.co.uk/--the "BBC" text is readable at 16x16, but not at 15x15.

I swear this is a dupe. Whatever bug we had where the favicon looked different in the location bar than in the tab... I can't seem to find it though.

Right, so the reason this happens is because the favicon in the tab bar is 1 to 2 px smaller than the one in the location bar. See bug 310630 comment 10 (and 11) (that's also the bug I was thinking about).
