The default setting for the sidebar after installing Mozialla is to be enabled.
Immediately after installation, I switched off the sidebar from the View Menu.
Next, I typed in the following URL:
http://www.google.com
From Google, I searched for "Mozilla". The sidebar returned! Repeated attempts
to turn off the sidebar and keep it off when using Google failed. After each
search, the sidebar returned.
NOTE: This behavior is not limited to Google, but it seemed like the easiest way
for you to reproduce this bug. :-)
Workaround: Disable the sidebar from the View menu. Immediately after disabling
the sidebar, close all browser windows. Now restart Mozilla and perform another
search with Mozilla. The sidebar does NOT appear!
It seems as if the only persistent setting for the sidebar is the setting during
start up. Perhaps this is a feature, but if it is, it is VERY annoying.
Thank you for your time.

Yes, I think it is a feature, though in the future there will probably be a
preference to turn it off.
cc'ing johng to see what the behavior should really be

there is a pref under Navigator-->Internet search. you can turn off the popping open action on searches. These two prefs conflict
with each other and is the focus of bug 29904, of which this bug is being marked a dupe.
