I've already discussed these with Gerv and Shaver. I need the following newsgroups (and accompanying mailing lists) created: mozilla.dev.ajax mozilla.dev.web-development mozilla.dev.tech.css mozilla.dev.tech.javascript mozilla.dev.tech.html
Assignee: server-ops → aravind
What should these mailing lists be called?
Status: NEW → ASSIGNED
To stay consistent with the current scheme, i believe they should be: dev-ajax dev-web-development dev-tech-css dev-tech-javascript dev-tech-html
In a post for a different bug, Dave said that the news groups will have to be created first. So I will wait for him to get back and do that and then create these mailing lists. If this is urgent and needs to happen with/without the newsgroups, please let me know and I will go ahead and create them.
Creating them at the same time as the newsgroups is perfect.
I'm curious whether there's an ETA on this? I'd like to get the MDC topic pages updated to include all the mailing list/newsgroup links so people know that discussion areas exist, but I'd like to do them all at once. Let me know, thanks.

(In reply to comment #5) > I'm curious whether there's an ETA on this? Hopefully in about 24 hours. The newgroup request has been submitted to Giganews, I'll get the lists created as soon as the groups show up.
Status: NEW → ASSIGNED
These groups have now been created, according to my copy of Thunderbird :-) Gerv
Yeah, I saw them show up yesterday morning and was a bit busy with addons melting under the 1.5.0.1 load. :) I should have the lists up shortly.
OK, these are done. You should have the list admin password emails by now.

I'm a little confused by the naming. I was under the impression that the mozilla.dev hierarchy is for discussion of issues related to the development of the Mozilla codebase. At least some of these newsgroups seem targeted at web developers, based on the description in dria's blog. Wouldn't they belong under mozilla.web-developers (which is an already existing part of the hierarchy)? In particular, what is the difference between mozilla.dev.tech.css and the already existing mozilla.dev.tech.style? What about mozilla.dev.tech.javascript vs. the existing mozilla.dev.tech.js-engine? Is mozilla.dev.tech.html for discussion of code under content/html/* in the source tree (which is what I assume based on the location in the newsgroup hierarchy)? Or something else?
bz, we want to make sure we *don't* segregate discussion about the mozilla codebase and web content. The mozilla.web-developer hierarchy was a mistake to begin with and this is fixing that problem (the web-developer hierarchy will be removed).
So we want to have the .dom newswgroup to be filled with "how do I?" questions instead of actual discussion about our DOM implementation? That's a major problem we had with the old newsgroups... but if this is now the official reason for the newsgroup existing, that's good to know. Now I can unsubscribe from it.
These new groups don't seem to be on Google Groups yet. Could someone look into that? Thanks :)

m.d.l.cs doesn't exist m.d.ajax doesn't exist m.d.web-development doesn't exist m.d.t.* don't exist m.d.t.css has some messages. m.m.* don't exist
Sorry to be a bother about this, but we need the google groups to know about these so we have searchable archives.

Ticket was opened with Google to request these on February 8th. They were sent a reminder on March 9th. I'm sending another reminder right now.
It actually looks like they've added them already -- I noticed this last night but forgot to revisit this bug then. http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.dev.ajax http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.dev.tech.css http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.dev.tech.html http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.dev.tech.javascript http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.dev.web-development None have had traffic since being added that I know of, so I can only assume they're working properly. My apologies for not hitting this bug again last night.
