Sometimes is it not clear what exactly the right keystroke is, because the underscore is positioned under two letters.

thats exciting. i don't get that on my machine.. What is your system DPI set to? (not the pref in options as we ignore that on windows.....)
Do you have large/small fonts enabled?

96 DPI. And normal settings, no larger fonts than standard.
ClearType on, anti-aliasing off, ATI card, 1024x768, 32 bit, LCD (notebook).

Hm, this is a very related problem. Please take a look at this screenshot. Some underlined letters like this "g" are very ugly. The underscore strikes through the g.
Think it was not worthwhile to make a new bug for it :)
