it's happenned to me many times that after firefox was closed for a while, I just could not restart it at all, unless I reboot my system. Yhe message in that case is that Firefox is already running, though I cannot find the process "firefox.exe", or no message at all...when I reboot, I always get the message that Firefox is closing though it has disappeared from my screen long before...thanks for your help

Try if it also happens with all your extensions disabled.
If it doesn't make difference, try creating a new profile.
