I have read in depth most of the problems associated with bookmarks being lost and have tried all suggestions but the results are the same.  My important bookmarks have been wiped from my system completely.  
There is no .bak files and I have no other profiles on my system where Firefox could have stored any portion of my bookmarks.
This has happened to me twice so far and without rhyme or reason.  The last time I lost my bookmarks I had already updated a couple of weeks prior.  For this reason, I have stopped using Firefox.  A friend of mine told me that this happens to him all the time so he backs up his bookmarks before it happens.  Unfortunately, I failed to do so because I wasn't expecting such a problem.

+ make a regular copy of your Mozilla profile folder.
It is always wise to backup valuable data.
